VCAnnual Hilltop Bike Ride on April 1

CampforallCamp For All, Houston Texans Foundation and Kiwanis Club of Houston to host third annual Hilltop Bike Ride on April 1

HOUSTON (Feb. 16, 2006) – Camp For All, in cooperation with the Houston Texans Foundation and the Kiwanis Club of Houston, will host the third annual Camp For All Hilltop Bike Ride on Saturday, April 1, in Washington County. Held during the height of the county’s famous bluebonnet season, The Hilltop Ride begins at 8 a.m. at Camp For All, 6301 Rehburg Road, in Burton (near Brenham), and takes riders through a scenic 22, 44 or 66-mile course.

The annual springtime event is a recommended training ride of the BP MS 150 Houston to Austin Bike Tour, to be held April 22 and 23 in support of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

“In just three years, the Hilltop Ride has become a favorite among cyclists,” said Vicki LaRue, president and CEO of Camp For All and founder of the MS 150 Bike Tour. “Because of our great location between Houston and Austin, riders can train on a course very similar to what they’ll experience in the 150. We also put a lot of effort into offering a well-supported ride, and the cyclists appreciate that.”

While many of those participating in the ride are seasoned cyclists in training for the MS 150, the Hilltop Ride also welcomes novice riders, families with children and anyone who wants to enjoy a scenic bike ride in the country. The registration fee for the Hilltop Ride is $50 per cyclist and includes a fully-supported ride, complete with rest stops, drinks and snacks; a barbecue lunch at the end of the ride; and a Hilltop Ride t-shirt. Proceeds from the event benefit Camp For All, The Kiwanis Foundation of Houston and the Houston Texans Foundation. Sponsors of the Hilltop Ride include Akin Grump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, Gary Appelt MD, Blue Bell Creameries, Compass Bank, Margaret and Billy Dwyer, Griffin Travel, Insurance Alliance, Mexican Restaurants Inc., Northwest Cyclery, PolySpec LP, SG Interests, Sue and Tom Speck, The Tholstrup Law Firm and Zuber Insurance Agency. To register, call 713-686-5666 or visit www.active.com.

More about Camp For All Camp For All is a nonprofit camping and retreat facility working in partnership with special needs organizations to enrich the lives of children and adults with chronic illnesses and disabilities. The 206-acre camp, located at 6301 Rehburg Road in Burton, Texas, (near Brenham) provides unique, fully accessible camping experiences in a barrier-free environment.

VCViolet Crown CX Race Venue Change

Unfortunately we will no longer be able to use Moya Park as a race venue. Travis
County Park officials informed me a couple of weeks ago that, since a concrete sidewalk is now completed at Moya, they no longer want bicycles using the park as a race venue.

Our replacement venue is Webberville County Park, directions for which are provided below. Please note that we have revised some of the mileage estimates that were listed on the paper flyer handed out at the GCCA race (those numbers were a bit low). More details will be provided on the course in the coming days.

Imgp0518_1

Our wonderful sponsor, Mangia Chicago Stuffed Pizza, will be selling pizza, other food, and beverages at the race so bring your friends and family and celebrate with some of the best pizza in town. Truly a one-stop event!

Directions:

From the intersection of Hwy. 183 and FM 969 on the east side of

Austin, take FM 969 east 11 miles to the town of

Webberville, approximately 20-30 minutes from downtown

Austin. Three miles past the town of Webberville turn right onto Webberwood Drive and proceed to Park Lane, the first street on your right. Turn right and proceed to the park entrance.

NOTE: The sign for Webberville Park as you enter the town of Webberville is for a different park!

From

Houston: Take 71 west through

Bastrop. Turn right on 969 approximately 1.5 miles past

Bastrop (just past the Home Depot on the left and McCoy's on the right). Proceed approximately 12 miles to

Webberwood Drive. Turn left onto

Webberwood Drive and follow directions as above.

From San Antonio: Take 71 east to highway 183. Proceed north to 969 and follow directions as above.

VCThe Season is not Over! - AMLI Crit

Amli_2005Finish the 2005 season right here in the Violet Crown city with Team Hotel San Jose's AMLI Criterium, Saturday, October 22. Races go throughout the day with the first one (Cat 5) starting at 9:10 in the morning and the last one, the Pro 123 going off at 6:00. It's billed as Downtown Austin's Premier Cycling Event. Well I don't know about that but heck it's a bike race and one you can ride to. There are plenty of race choices. If you're not going for the Men's 123, you can do the Cat 4/5 or the Cat 3/4 or the Master 4/5 35+ or .... Heck, why limit yourself to one?  Here's the race flyer. At least come watch. Sit outside the Ginger Man with a beer and watch grown men and women strain their bodies.

VCViolet Crown Track Day at Alkek

Have you ever thought about racing on the track? Alkek Velodrome is just 2 hours away in northwest Houston. The problem is, you need to take a class to be certified on the track before you can race.
031004_alkek_track_masters_regionals_02So Violet Crown has made arrangements with the nice folks at Alkek to have a group class on this coming Saturday the 12th. If you take this class you will become a Cat 4 on the track and will be able to race at Alkek and most other velodromes.
The class will start at Noon, but you should arrive by 11 or so in order to get set up. You need not have a track bike: you can rent one for about $5. The cost of the class is $25. If you would like to carpool, there is a large group leaving from the Walmart in Bastrop on Saturday morning. Meet at 8:45 for rollout at 9 am.
If interested, email Jay Bond at jbond@tda.org.
You need not be a member of Violet Crown to attend. Anyone is welcome!

We apologize for the late notice, but it took us awhile to get a firm date and commitment.

VCTime to order your 2005 Clothing!

2005yellowjmh_1
We've finally got the details worked out for our 2005 clothing. Now it's your turn. Just download the handy PDF file below, print it out, and send it in with your hard-earned scratch.
We've got a pretty wide selection this year: 2 short sleeve jersey styles, long sleeve jerseys, jackets, vests, regular shorts, big shorts, skinsuits, armwarmers, and socks.
If you're not sure about sizing, just try on your 2004 VC clothing. Sizing is the same this year. If you can't do that, then come to the December meeting. We'll have a full sizing kit there.
Be sure and return the form by the time of the meeting (Monday, December 6th). That's the deadline for ordering. We'll probably have a few extras of the most popular items, but they will go fast so if you want clothing you need to pre-order it.

VCThe Tour Baby! Film Showing and Auction to Benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation

Team Hotel San Jose and the Peloton Project will host a showing of The Tour Baby! a behind the scenes film of the Tour de France on August 18th at 7:30 pm (film at 8:30) outdoors at Jos Hot Coffee (1300 S. Congress) to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The Tour Baby! chronicles filmmaker and cyclist Scott Coady and his amazing journey following the entire Tour de France from start to finish. Embarking on an adventure of a lifetime, Scott experienced and filmed first-hand the excitement and drama of the world's most grueling sporting event.

Going from a complete outsider at the start of the race to standing atop the winner's podium at the finish, Scott not only filmed the race, he became part of it! Along the way he met and captured on film exclusive "behind the scenes" interviews and events that make the Tour de France so special. Scenes include Lance Armstrong in his hotel room, Robin Williams, Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen, crazed tour fans, US Postal Riders in the team bus and in their hotel rooms and the after race parties in Paris.

The 1 hour 13 minute film is full of many surprises and special guests from the European Professional Road Cycling scene. If you have ever wanted to see the Tour for yourself, but haven't made it over yet, this film is the next best thing. Professionally edited and with a soundtrack provided by some of the hottest bands on the west coast, The Tour Baby! will entertain and inspire you to follow your dreams too.

Admission is free. Cash and check donations will be welcome after the show with all proceeds benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation. A silent auction will begin at 7:30 and the film will start at 8:30. Bring your chairs or something to sit on

The Lance Armstrong Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for those living with, through, and beyond cancer.

VC7th Annual Luckenbach Ride Saturday July 10th

luckenbachJust a reminder, the the Luckenbach Ride is this SATURDAY. It will depart from Freewheeling in central Austin @ 7:15am (w/15 minute rule in effect!) Saturday July 10th. The total distance of the Luckenbach Ride is ~87 miles (one way) and the route follows scenic Hill Country back roads; this does not include an extra 15 miles to Fredricksburg should you choose (see info about the post ride BBQ below). People are looking for a ride back (see comment to this post). If you have room for another passenger, please post a comment.

The ride finishes in Luckenbach and cyclists should begin arriving in Luckenbach sometime after 1:00 depending on the pace and rest stops of course.

The route from Austin to Luckenbach will travel through the towns of Bee Caves, Dripping Springs, Blanco and end in Luckenbach. The traditional rest stop in Blanco will once again be at the Real Ale Brewery . Shorter ride variations could begin in Dripping Springs and ride out to Luckenbach (~60 miles) or begin in Blanco and out to Luckenbach (~30 miles).

This year, an afternoon BBQ follows at the Sundstrom's chalet in downtown Fredricksburg rather than the Tasch farmstead. If interested in the ride email Edward Tasch , and for more information about the post ride BBQ in Fredricksburg (e.g. directions and what to bring) email David Sundstrom. s'il vous plaît RSVP!

The idea of the ride is to bicycle out to Luckenbach, have a family member or friend meet you there (obviously they drive out), drink a cool beer or soda under the oak trees at the Luckenbach general store and visit a while. And if you chose, the option exists for a BBQ afterwards. The ride and BBQ are open to all regardless of club affiliation.

NOTE: should you attend and drive to the start at Freewheeling, please park your vehicle along the wooden fence (north side of parking lot) awayfrom the shop so that we do not occupy Freewheeling customer parking.

READ THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE --> the only thing "official" about this "event" is that we have all agreed to meet and share a ride to Luckenbach. There are NO support vehicles and cell phone coverage can not be assumed in the Hill Country. No SAG, no sympathy, no noth'n... Some roads in Travis, Hays, Blanco, Kendal & Gillespie Counties have very little or no shoulder on which to ride. And drivers in Central Texas have a notorious reputation for threatening cyclists! July can get damn hot (although this year has been
cool...jinx!) and water stops are few and far between.

All the best,
edward tasch & anne crawford

VCRide Calendar for Week of May 2nd

armadilloWell there's a lot of cycling going on these days and I thought I'd help you sort through it all by laying out this week's ride schedule. Don't let things like family, kids, work, etc. get in the way. Here it is. Just do it.

Of course you were there today at Sunday's ride where there was a convergence of the TTTTR and SMAFR rides out east of town (made for a very large pack). That was good for 65 or so miles. Tomorrow, no ride. Just plan on being at the club meeting (see agenda below). Tuesday of course is the Tuesday nighter. And Wednesday kicks off our 1st week of the Manda a Manda TT series. Don't kid yourself, this is good for you. Then on Thursday, enjoy a few laps around the lovely little course down by Town Lake at the PURE Crit series. This is the 5th in the series and the turn out has been great. For goodness sake, give it rest on Friday. You'll need it because Saturday is the Armadillo Hill Country Classic. Who's doing the 120 mile distance? Register online.

VCThe Superdrome is Rockin'

Barry Stevenson writes:
Frisco Cycling Club would like to invite VC to come watch the U.S. National Track Cycling Team at the Superdrome in Frisco. The team will be here for 7 weeks training for elite level competition, including the 2004 Summer Olympics. We will have a training schedule soon. Please help us spread the word.

Also note the important track competitions at the Superdrome starting April 30! They will directly affect the selection of the US Olympic Track Cycling Team.

**Also, the track has been resurfaced so it is now much "stickier" and safer to ride on (similar to a tennis court surface). The track will reopen this week, and first Friday night races start March 5. We will also be offering Development Classes to riders who have not been on the Superdrome. If anyone was intimidated about riding the Superdrome in the
past, the new surface should help alleviate their fears.

Finally, the club is purchasing 10 new junior-size track bikes so we can start rebuilding the Junior program. We'll send you more information on that later. With the new sticky surface, even young riders can now safely ride at the Superdrome.

Come join us!

Thank you. Barry Stevenson

VCVC Day at the Track

The Track
It's not too late to sign up for VC's Day at the Track on this coming Sunday, March 14th. Spend the afternoon in class at the Alkek Velodrome in Houston. You'll learn how to ride and race on the track and come away with a Cat 4 upgrade so you can race on the track in the future. It's a blast! Carpools leave Austin around 11 am for the class that starts at 1 pm. You can rent a track bike ($5) but should bring your own pedals, and measure your saddle height. The class costs $10 (for the Alkek instructors, etc.). Contact our President, Greg Hall, for details. Directions.

VCTTTTR - 3/13 & 3/14

3/13 Saturday, I'll be riding from Einstein's Bagels at Braker & 183 at 8:00. That's despite the ACA ride being a good course (Bastrop) especially if you do the double park option. But Bastrop doesn't fit into my afternoon kid duty schedule. Maybe others will head to Bastrop? Or Hellweek?
3/14 Sunday, ACA ride from Leander.

Next weekend is looking like bagels on Saturday and ACA on Sunday. More details later. Of course, the 27th is the Rosedale ride. I hope everyone is registered (even if you'll be off racing that day).

VCDevelopmental Crit Series

Looks like team Hotel San Jose is putting on a 12 week-long Austin crit series starting in May. It will be held on the north shore of town lake, just east of I-35. That's the good news. The bad news is there is no 3/4 race. Your choices are open, cat 5, juniors, and women. It's a Developmental series...that includes an open division for those cat 1,2s that need more developing. Get the details here: teamhotelsanjose. B.T.W., the new Austin team will also be putting on the Amili 2nd Street Crit on May 8th. Should be fun!

VCTTTTR - 3/6 & 3/7

This week's TTTTR aka B&TETA:
Saturday, 8:00, Einstein's Bagels, Braker & 183.
Sunday, 8:00, Einstein's Bagels, Braker & 183.

Looks like next week we'll be able to break out of the mold and do some ACA rides. Of course you're welcome to do that this week - if you want to drive to Leakey. Or you could do the 8 AM Sunday at Freewheeling ride with Dave.
